Day One Results

Fairlawn, Ohio - Grand Valley State leads a 15-team field after the opening day of the second annual Zippy Invitational, held in Fairlawn, Ohio. The Lakers shot a first-round 311 (+23) on Monday (Oct. 5) and have four golfers in the top-20, including three in the top five. Play will conclude on Tuesday (Oct. 6).

GVSU sits one stroke ahead of Toledo, which compiled a 312 (+24) and six strokes ahead of host school, Akron, which notched a 317 (+29). Ohio is fourth with a 330 (+42), while Eastern Kentucky, Dayton, and Ashland are tied in fifth place with a 331 (+43). Participating in the invitational are 11 Division I programs, while three GLIAC schools (Ferris State is in ninth place) are also competing.

Sophomore Sarah Hoffman fired a 39-37 for a first-round score of 76 (+4), which puts her alone in second place, just three strokes back of Akron's Kristen Hill (73, +1). Hoffman is joined in the top five by teammates Caitlin Bennett and Ashley Smith, who are in a six-way tie for third place. Both golfers shot 38-39 for a 77 (+5) on Monday.

Junior Allie Tyler is tied for 17th after shooting 41-40 for an 81 (+9), while freshman Ashley Beard is tied for 37th with an 85 (+13).
