ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's golf team is in fourth after the first round of the Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invite, using a team score of 323 and an even-par round from sophomore Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich./Chippewa Valley) to get off to a solid start.
Despite nearly perfect fall weather in west Michigan and at the Meadows Golf Course, Hartigan was the only player in the field able to play at par or below, shooting a first-round 72 (E) to claim the individual lead after one round of play.
Senior Marni Weinstein (Farmington Hills, Mich./Walled Lake Western) shot an 81 (+9) in the first round and is in a tie for 17th place.
Junior Veronica Ryan (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy) also took part in the competition but wasn't included in the team score after shooting an opening round 86 (+14).
Sophomore Molly Esordi (Grosse Ile, Mich.), playing as an individual, had a solid showing in the first round, carding an 82 (+10) to score a tie for 21st place on the leaderboard.
The Lakers' team score of 323 (+35) has them in a tie for fourth with Missouri-St. Louis. California (Pa.) leads after a first round 314 (+26), with Ashland (315, +27) and Findlay (316, +28) just behind.
The second and final round of action will get off at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 30) at the Meadows in Allendale.
