East Lansing, Mich. - After 54 holes at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., Grand Valley State finished 10th overall in the nearly all-Division I tournament. The tournament, hosted at Forest Akers West Golf Course, featured nine Division I teams. GVSU junior Sarah Hoffman led the Lakers, as she tied for 28th place.
The teams played 36 holes on Saturday (Sept. 25) and 18 holes on Sunday (Sept. 26). Grand Valley State finished the weekend with a total score of 969 (+105) after rounds of 323 and 319 on Saturday and a 327 on Sunday. The Lakers finished 27 strokes better than the only other Division II school in the tournament, Ferris State (996, +132). Notre Dame captured a five-stroke win by shooting 890 (+26) and holding off Kent State (895, +31) and Michigan State (896, +32). Iowa State (904, +40) and Long Beach State (935, +71) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Hoffman led the Lakers with her tie for 28th place, as she combined for a 235 (+19). She shot 77-76-82 for her two-day, three-round score. Senior Allie Tyler tied for 42nd place with a 239 (+23), as Tyler stayed consistent by shooting 81-80-78 over the weekend.
Sophomore Ashley Beard tied for 52nd place after shooting 80-84-80 for a 244 (+28), while classmate Marni Weinstein placed 57th with a 253 (+37). Weinstein notched rounds of 85-81-87 for her tally. Freshman Veronica Ryan tied for 60th place with a 257 (+41), as she shot 85-82-90 during the tournament.
Grand Valley State hosts the Laker Fall Classic next weekend (Oct. 3-4) at The Meadows on GVSU's campus.
