Yorktown, Ind. - Among a dozen Division I schools, Grand Valley State placed third at the Cardinal Classic in Yorktown, Ind. on Sunday (Sept. 20). The Lakers recorded a team score of 599 (+23) to finish one stroke behind the host school, Ball State (598, +22), and GVSU had a pair of players in the top-15.
Eastern Michigan took home the team title with a score of 591 (+15). GVSU used consecutive rounds of 301 and 298 to finish ahead of Xavier (602, +26) and Indiana State (613, +37), which rounded out the top five schools. Out of the 16-team field, Grand Valley State and Findlay (14th place) were the lone Division II programs.
Leading the way for GVSU was junior Allie Tyler. Finishing just one stroke behind Eastern Michigan's Emily Podzielinski for the individual medalist, Tyler fired back-to-back 71's for a 142 (-2). Podzielinski and Tyler were the only two players in the field to finish under par.
Sophomore Sarah Hoffman tied for 12th place after she notched consecutive rounds of 75 for a 150 (+6). Senior Caitlin Bennett rebounded by shooting a 74 on Sunday after an opening day 79, which gave her a two-day score of 153 (+9), tying her for 23rd place. Senior Ashley Smith placed in a tie for 28th with a 154 (+10) after rounds of 76 and 78. Freshman Ashley Beard tied for 46th place with a 159 (+15).
The Lakers compete next at the Bing Beall Classic in Findlay, Ohio next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 28-29).
