Allendale, Mich.- The Grand Valley State women's golf team took home a fourth-place finish at the Laker Fall Classic, hosted at The Meadows on Monday and Tuesday. GVSU shot 306 on the opening day and followed with a 316 for a combined 622 (+46). 14 teams competed on the par-72 course that measures 5,923 yards on the campus of Grand Valley State.
California (Pa.) fired a 296 on Tuesday to win the team trophy with a score of 606 (+30). Indianapolis finished two strokes behind the Vulcans at 608 (+32), while Ferris State edged out the Lakers with a 618 (+42). Grand Valley State finished in fourth place ahead of Upper Iowa, who rounded out the top-5 with a 636 (+60).
Junior Ashley Smith was GVSU's top finisher with a 149 (75-74), which put her in a tie for third place with Bethel College's Shanna Page. Sophomore Kristina Langton tied with two others for 11th with a 154 (73-81) and sophomore Allie Tyler recorded a 156 (78-78), which placed her in a four-way tie for 14th.
The medalist was Simone DeSouza of California (Pa.) with an even-par 144 (73-71), who finished two strokes ahead of Kristi Piepenbrink of Indianapolis, who shot +2 with a 146 (79-67).
After four straight days of golf, the Lakers do not compete again until Sept. 22-23 at the Ball State Tournament in Muncie, Ind.
