Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State women's golf program clinched fourth place, its best finish ever at the NCAA National Championships, after a 325 in final round action in Howey in the Hills, Florida. The Lakers entered the day in fifth place, which they placed at last year's national tournament, but used their best round of the four day event to move up into the trophies at 153 over par. Melissa Sneller and Kristi Vienneau both shot 78 on Saturday to lead the Lakers, and Sneller finished the tournament in ninth place individually at +23.
Rollins College won the national championship by 39 strokes over its nearest competition after firing +69 over the weekend. GVSU was battling with regional foe Longwood for the fourth position and ended up with a three-stroke edge.
Vienneau finished the tournament at +42, which placed her 25th in the country. Nikki Augustine ended her career at GVSU with an 83 on Saturday, the Lakers' third score of the day, and Shannon Briggs shot 86. Briggs was 35th overall at the championships, while Augustine placed 40th. Melissa Reigle was +51 over the four days and placed 37th.
GVSU also won the GLIAC Championship during the spring and placed second at the NCAA Regional Tournament.
