Mesa, Az. - Grand Valley State rests in seventh place after day three of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships in Mesa, Az., as the Lakers posted a team score of 319 on Friday (May 14). GVSU is two strokes back of being in the top-half of the tournament, as three Laker golfers are in the top-40 heading into Saturday's (May 15) final round of play.
After three days of play at Longbow Golf Club, Grand Valley State owns a total score of 946, putting them at +94 and in seventh place, two strokes behind sixth-place CSU Monterey Bay (944, +92). GVSU has used rounds of 315, 312, and 319 for its three-day tally. Defending national champion Nova Southeastern has all but locked up consecutive national titles, as the Sharks are in first with an 879 (+27), while Rollins (914, +62) is in second place. Florida Southern and Tarleton State are tied for third place at 922 (+70), while Sonoma State is one stroke back (923, +71), rounding out the top five schools.
The Lakers' top performer through the first three days has been Ashley Smith. On Friday, the senior notched a 75 to go with her first two rounds of 77 and 74 for a combined score of 226 (+13). Smith is in a tie for seventh place with Sonoma State's Spencer Heller. GVSU's other top-25 golfer is Sarah Hoffman, tied for 22nd place with five other individuals. The sophomore has used rounds of 76-77-81 for her total score of 234 (+21).
Just three strokes back of Hoffman is senior Caitlin Bennett, who is in a seven-way tie for 36th place at 237 (+24). Bennett has been very consistent over the three days, with scores of 78-80-79. Tied for 55th place is freshman Ashley Beard, who has used rounds of 84-81-84 for a total of 249 (+36). Junior Allie Tyler is in 65th place with a 260 (+47), as her scores over the three days have been 89-87-84.

Two golfers are battling for the individual national title, as Newberry's Maria Luz Besio leads the tournament with a 208 (-5), while Nova Southeastern's Sandra Changkija is a few strokes behind at 212 (-1).
GVSU begins the final round of play on Saturday (May 15) at 8:45 a.m., with all five golfers teeing off in 10-minute increments from that starting time.
