Senior Melissa Sneller sank a five-foot birdie on the 18th hole to claim the school's first-ever NCAA Division II Women's Golf National Championship Individual title. She finished even par with a four round score of 292 (74, 72, 73, 73). Sneller and Pamela Feggans from Florida Southern were tied going into the 18th hole on Saturday and Feggans missed her birdie attempt and made her par putt to post a one-over par 74. Sneller knocked her third shot on the par five 18th hole five feet from the pin and sank her birdie putt for an even par 73 and the win.
The Lakers recorded their highest finish as a team in school history as they claimed second place at the 2005 NCAA Division II National Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Lakers tallied a four round +52 score of 1220. Rollins College won the title with a +17 score of 1185. GVSU finished 23 strokes ahead of third place Florida Southern.
Junior Enid Gage tied for 11th as she recorded a four round score of 308 (78, 76, 75, 79), while junior Laura Leatherman finished right behind her in 13th place, posting a 309 (76, 77, 74, 82). Junior Kristi Vienneau recorded a four day total of 315 (79, 74, 77, 85), which tied her for 18th place. Sophomore Kate MacDonald tied for 20th place with a 316 (77, 79, 76, 84).
Grand Valley State was making its fourth appearance in the National Championships in the past five years. Grand Valley finished in sixth place last season, while recording a fourth place finish in 2003. In 2002, the Lakers were fifth and in 2000, GVSU was sixth.
