Day Two Results

Mesa, Az. - Two days into the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships in Mesa, Az., Grand Valley State rests in sixth place after shooting a 312 on Thursday (May 13). The Lakers opened the day in fifth place, but despite scoring better than Wednesday's opening round, GVSU moved down a spot with two days left to play. The 72-hole tournament being held at Longbow Golf Club will conclude on Saturday (May 15).

Grand Valley State shot a 315 on Wednesday and own a total team score of 627 (+59), putting the Lakers eight strokes back of Florida Southern (619, +51) for fifth place. Defending national champion Nova Southeastern is running away with the tournament, having shot a two-day total of 583 (+15), owning a 29-stroke advantage over second-place Rollins (612, +44). Tarleton State (616, +48) and Sonoma State (618, +50) are in third and fourth place, respectively.

For the Lakers, senior Ashley Smith is the team's lowest scorer, as she owns a score of 151 (+9), putting her in eighth place. Smith shot a 74 on Thursday after Wednesday's opening round of 77 to move up seven spots from a 15th place tie, where she began the day. Also in the top dozen scorers for GVSU is Sarah Hoffman. The sophomore is tied for 11th place, as she totaled a 153 (+11) with rounds of 76 and 77 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tied for 34th place is senior Caitlin Bennett with a 158 (+16). Bennett followed a first-day 78 with an 80 on Thursday for her tally. Rookie Ashley Beard shot an 81 on day two to total a 165 (+23), as Beard shot an 84 on Wednesday. The freshman is in 54th place. Junior Allie Tyler is tied for 65th place with a 176 (+34) after rounds of 89 and 87.

 

 

Only two players in the tournament are under par, as Newberry's Maria Luz Besio leads all players with a 139 (-3), while Nova Southeastern's Sandra Changkija tallied a 141 (-1). Grand Valley State begins teeing off on Friday (May 14) at 7:50 a.m. PDT.
