JOLIET, Ill. - The Laker women's golf team shot the fourth-best team round of the tournament en route to finishing fourth at the 2013 NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Tournament at Joliet Country Club on Tuesday (May 7).
Indianapolis ran away with the victory, finishing at 924 for the three-day tournament. Second was Ashland at 970, with the final spot advancing to nationals going to California (Pa.) at 971. GVSU was fourth at 976, followed by Findlay (980), Missouri-St. Louis (982), Ferris State (986), Drury (998) and Southern Indiana (1018).
The Lakers were led by senior Ashley Beard (Williston, N.D.) on the final day, as she turned in a third-round 76 to finish at 242 and in a tie for 17th.
Freshman Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings, Mich.) and junior Veronica Ryan (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy) both shot 78 on the final day. Shipley finished at 244 for the tournament and in 19th, while Ryan carded a 247 total to finish in a tie for 25th.
Also tying for 25th was sophomore Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich./Chippewa Valley), who turned in her second consecutive 81.
The final Laker competing was senior Marni Weinstein (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), who turned in a final round 81 to finish at 255 for the tournament and in 38th.
The Lakers captured the GLIAC Championship at the end of April, with Hartigan earning GLIAC Medalist honors, and turned in seven top-three finishes out of the 11 tournaments the Lakers played.
