JOLIET, Ill. - The Grand Valley State women's golf team got a 13-shot improvement from the team on Monday (May 6) and moved in to sixth place after two rounds of play at the 2013 NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Tournament.
Indianapolis continues to lead as they shot the best day two round, just as they did on the opening day of competition. They are at 618 and hold a comfortable lead. California (Pa.) is at 643 and in second, the position that every team will be chasing on the final day of competition.
Ashland (646) is third, Findlay (649) is fourth, Missouri-St. Louis (654) is fifth and GVSU (663) is sixth. Drury (667), Ferris State (675) and Southern Indiana (691) round out the field. The Lakers will go in to the final round down 20 strokes to second place, the position needed to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
The biggest improvement of the day came from junior Veronica Ryan (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy), who went from a first-round 89 to a second-round 80 (+8), the best score of the day on day two for the Lakers. She now sits at 169 (+25) for the tournament and in 34th.
Senior Ashley Beard (Williston, N.D.) and sophomore Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich./Chippewa Valley) both turned in cards of 81 (+9), and both are at 166 (+22) for the tournament and in a tie for 23rd.
Freshman Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings, Mich.) shot a second consecutive 83 (+11) to also find herself at 166 (+22) for the tournament and matched with her teammates in 23rd.
Senior Marni Weinstein (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) shot an 89 (+17) on day two and is now at 174 (+30) for the tournament, in a tie for 40th.
The Lakers will tee off in the final round of play at approximately 11:03 a.m. Eastern at the Joliet Country Club on Tuesday (May 7).
