JOLIET, Ill. - The Grand Valley State women's golf team struggled on the first day of Super Region 1 competition at the Joliet Country Club on Sunday (May 5), turning in a team score of 338 to find themselves in seventh after one round. Despite the season-worst round, the Lakers are still only 13 shots out of the top two that advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Indianapolis leads the field after an impressive 303 team score to open up competition. Second is Ashland at 325, followed by California (Pa.) (327), Findlay (330), and Missouri-St. Louis and Drury tied at 333. GVSU is at 338, while Ferris State (339) and Southern Indiana (354) round out the field.
Freshman Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings, Mich.) turned in the best individual round for the Lakers, carding an 83 (+11), and is tied for 19th.
Sophomore Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and seniors Marni Weinstein (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Ashley Beard (Williston, N.D.) all shot an 85 (+13), with Weinstein being the only Laker to tally a birdie on the day, and she had two of them. Weinstein birdied both the 14th and 17th holes down the stretch. All three are tied for 30th place.
Junior Veronica Ryan (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy) carded a first-round 89 (+17) on the opening day of competition.
The second of three rounds of competition will get under way on Monday (May 6) morning at the Joliet Country Club.
