Final Results

Springfield, Mo. - Grand Valley State completed its domination of the 2010 Super Region One Tournament on Tuesday (May 4) in Springfield, Mo., as the Lakers won the championship by a 13-stroke margin. GVSU notched three of the four lowest scores of the entire tournament and finished with four players in the top seven individual scorers. The victory gives Grand Valley State its third straight regional title (fifth overall) and advances the Lakers to the Division II Women's Golf Championships for the ninth time in school history.

GVSU completed the 54-hole tournament with a score of 906, which put the Lakers at +42 for the three-day event. After firing an opening round score of 304, Grand Valley State shot consecutive rounds of 301 to close out the last two rounds. Only Indianapolis' score of 303 on Tuesday was lower than any of the Laker 18-hole scores. Indianapolis placed second with a score of 919 (+55), while California (PA) was third with a 926 (+62). GVSU, Indianapolis, and California (PA) all advance to the Division II Women's Golf Championships in Mesa, Az. on May 12-15. Drury (939, +75) and Southern Indiana (951, +87) rounded out the top five schools.

Taking home a runner-up finish for Grand Valley State was sophomore Sarah Hoffman, who tallied a three-day score of 224 (+8). She placed second behind Drury's Katrina Choate (222, +6) by shooting 77-73-74 over the three days to lead the Laker contingent in the top-10. In her final regional tournament, Caitlin Bennett totaled a 226 (+10) to place fourth. The senior started the final day in a tie for ninth place, but capped off her strong tournament with scores of 76-78-72 to move into the top four scores.

Placing in a tie for fifth place was senior Ashley Smith, who finished in a tie with Indianapolis' Lyndsay McBride. Smith recorded a 227 (+11) after a very consistent performance with rounds of 75-76-76. The fourth Laker in the top eight scores was junior Allie Tyler, who finished in a three-way tie for seventh place. Tyler shot 76-74-79 for a total of 229 (+13), tying with Lyndsey Bevill of Nothern Kentucky and Sarah Prascsak of Indianapolis. In her first regional competition, freshman Ashley Beard placed 31st with a 241 (+25), as she shot 82-78-81 for the week.

 

 

Grand Valley State has won the East Regional Championship in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, while the Lakers have advanced to the national tournament in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010. GVSU has finished in second place at the Division II Women's Golf Championships twice - in 2005 and 2009 - and has never finished lower than sixth place at the national tournament.
