BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Grand Valley State women's golf team is off to a solid start at the 2013 GLIAC Women's Golf Championship at Stone Ridge G.C., leading after one round of play with a team score of 312. All five Lakers are in the top 11 of the standings, including the four counted scores all being inside the top seven.
GVSU leads the way at 312, outpacing Ashland (319), Ferris State (321), Findlay (331) and Northwood (338) in the top five.
Sophomore Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich./Chippewa Valley) is the tournament leader by two strokes after putting together a first-round 75 (+3) that included a birdie and four bogeys.
Freshman Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings, Mich.) is one of those just behind Hartigan, finding herself in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard after a 77 (+5).
Junior Veronica Ryan (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy) could have had one of the better rounds of the day if not for a tough 17th and 18th hole. Ryan was on pace for a top three round, but double-bogeyed each of the last two holes. She finished at 80 (+8) for the round despite leading the team with two birdies.
Senior Marni Weinstein (Farmington Hills, Mich./Walled Lake Western) also carded a first-round 80. Both herself and Ryan are tied for seventh.
The final Laker competing is senior Ashley Beard (Williston, N.D.), who turned in an 81 in the first round and is in a tie for 11th.
Round number two of the three-round tournament will get under way on Saturday (Apr. 27) morning.
