March 31, 2003

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State opened the spring season of the 2002-03 year with a three-stroke victory at the Northern Kentucky Spring Invitational. The Lakers shot an opening round of 313 and followed it up with a 329 to take the title with a 642 total. NKU was second at 645 and University of Dayton finished third seven strokes behind. Freshman Kristi Vienneau was tied for the top individual score at 155 after 36 holes, but fell to NKU's Kim Keyer-Scott in a playoff to finish second overall. It is the second victory of the year for GVSU as they also won the Findlay Fall Classic last September.

The Lakers opening round of 313 is the second lowest team round in GVSU history behind only a 308, which they fired in the fall. Vienneau and Shannon Briggs both shot 77 in the first day of action. Melissa Sneller and Melissa Reigle shot 79 and 80, respectively, to give the Lakers a nine stroke advantage entering Sunday's final round.

On Sunday, Vienneau fired a 78 to lead GVSU for the second straight day. Briggs finished with an 82 for a total of 159 and a sixth place finish. Sneller and Reigle both ended up at 164 for the tournament and finished in a tie for 13th individually.

The Lakers will next play at Findlay on April 11th before playing in the Western Michigan Invitational on April 13-14.
