HENDERSON, Nev. - The Grand Valley State women's golf team began the spring season on Sunday (Mar. 3) afternoon, and got off to a promising start, sitting second after one round of play at the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Revere Golf Club.
The Lakers carded a 40-over 328 in the first round of play and trail only Midwestern State by seven shots at 321 (+33).
All five Laker golfers are in the top 13 of the individual results, including the top spot on the leaderboard.
Tied for the individual lead in the tournament is sophomore Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich.), who shot a first-round 79 (+7).
Senior Marni Weinstein (Farmington Hills, Mich.) is tied for fifth on the leaderboard after recording a first-round 81 (+9).
The trio of freshman Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings, Mich.) and juniors Veronica Ryan (Dallas, Texas) and Cassady Kauble (Grand Rapids, Mich.) all turned in a first-round score of 84 (+12) to tie for 13th after Sunday's play.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Molly Esordi (Grosse Ile, Mich.) carded a first-round score of 95 to tie for 46th.
Midwestern State (321, +33) and Grand Valley State (328, +40) lead the way on the field, while the top five is rounded out by Indianapolis (339, +51), University of Redlands (348, +60) and Lewis-Clark State (349, +61).
The second, and final, round of play will begin on Monday (Mar. 4) afternoon.
