ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's basketball opens its 2012-13 season against Olivet on Monday at 8 p.m. in GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
GVSU ended the 2011-12 campaign with a 10-16 mark overall including a 7-12 record in conference play and just missed making the conference tournament. With more upperclassmen on their roster, the Lakers were tabbed to finish third in the GLIAC North Division preseason poll.
The Lakers welcome back seniors Alex Stelfox (Bowie, Md.) and Lauren Stodola (Jenison, Mich.) after both missed majority of the 2011-12 season due to injury. GVSU also returns starters senior Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich.), junior Breanna Kellogg (DeWitt, Mich.) and sophomore Meryl Cripe (Elmhurst, Ill.). Taylor led the team last season with 14.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
Olivet returns all of its starters from a season ago in which the Comets went 7-18. Junior Kelsey Campbell leads the Comets after averaging 9.4 points per game last year. Senior Sydney Radee led the team off the board last year, picking up 6.3 rebounds per game, while Soquitta DeShazor is just behind with 5.7 caroms per contest. Olivet was picked to finish fifth in the MIAA preseason poll.
