Grand Rapids, Mich. - On Saturday (Sept. 19), the Grand Valley State women's basketball team participated in a project for Habitat for Humanity. All 19 team members (14 players, five coaches and staff members) volunteered their time and efforts that day at Dawes Court Condominiums in Grand Rapids.
The Lakers worked for eight hours at a fourplex (four connecting townhouses) on the Dawes Court complex. It was the second straight year the team worked at Dawes Court, as GVSU worked on a different home in 2008. The 19 team members completed various projects, including hanging cabinets, painting walls and ceilings, putting up wall trim, and building a deck.
"This always proves to be a great bonding experience for our team," said Laker head coach Janel Burgess. "We worked extremely hard together for an entire day. When we left the site, we walked away exhausted, but felt like we had accomplished so much. It is always a great feeling to get out in the community, represent Grand Valley State in a positive manner, and help out others."
