Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's basketball team spent this past weekend lending a hand to those less fortunate by participating in a Habitat for Humanity project in the Grand Rapids area. Last Saturday (Sept. 13), the entire Laker team and coaches used the opportunity to help others as a team-building event that also allowed them to give back to the community.
Head coach Janel Burgess and her team assisted in a variety of projects on a condominium being built by Habitat for Humanity. The Lakers spent the day painting both the inside and outside of the condominium, installing shelving units, oven hoods, and door handles, sanding a variety of wood-finished items and other helpful tasks.
"This is a great way for our student-athletes to give back to the community that gives so much to them," said Burgess. "Our day was full of teamwork, communication, and hard work. Once again, we witnessed that there is no one person or one thing bigger than ourselves."
Coming off of a 16-12 season, GVSU opens the 2008-09 campaign with an exhibition game at Michigan State at Nov. 9 before beginning the regular season with a home game against Saint Joseph's (Ind.) on Nov. 15.
