Laker Basketball Adds Thorburn to Coaching Staff

Sept. 4, 2008

Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's basketball team has added Megan Thorburn to the Laker coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach. Thorburn will join GVSU head coach Janel Burgess and assistant coaches Jill VanderEnde and Abby Wiseman on the Lakers' staff.

Among other duties, Thornburn will work with both guards and posts. Her main priorities will include team travel, coordinating community service, film exchange, and working as the team's video coordinator.

"We are very fortunate to have Megan join our Laker family," said Burgess. "She is a proven winner and an extremely hard worker. Megan will be able to mentor our young ladies in many avenues and continue to blossom as a young coach in our profession."

Thorburn arrives at GVSU after a four-year career at Bowling Green State University in which the Falcons compiled a stellar 103-25 record, including three Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament championships. From 2003-06, Thorburn helped BGSU to three regular season MAC championships and the Falcons made a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the `Sweet 16' in 2006-07. It was the first `Sweet 16' appearance in program history.

During her career at BGSU, Thorburn played in 126 games, starting 87 of those contests. She averaged 4.8 ppg. and made 92 three-pointers over her four years. Thorburn started all 35 games in 2006-07 when the Falcons set a school-record by going 31-4. The 31 victories are the most by a MAC basketball team - men's or women's - in history.

Thorburn has worked summer basketball camps for Bowling Green State and at Mason High School in Mason, Mich., where she was a three-time, first-team all-conference selection.
