Grand Valley State's men's and women's cross country teams are looking to clinch the Great Lakes Regional Championship titles on Saturday at Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Laker women will be shooting to defend their title for the fourth consecutive year, while the men are in hopes of their third straight championship title. The men's 10K is slated to begin at 11:00 CST, with the women's 6K following at 12:15 CST.
The top four women's teams and the top three men's teams out of the Great Lakes Region will advance to the 2004 Division II Cross Country National Championships in Evansville, Ind. on Nov. 20.
"We are focused on racing a solid race on both sides. The number one and most important goal is to advance to the National Championships two weeks later," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "Our focus is to race a team race that will allow us to qualify for the championships, but at the same time come out of the race with enough gas left in the tank to compete at our highest level two weeks later at the NCAA Championships."
"We also understand and respect the other teams in our region and we will have to come ready to execute our race plan," added Baltes. We also understand that if we do not race to our potential there are a handful of teams that can knock us off on both sides."
