GVSU Starts Season at Hope Vanderbilt Invitational

Holland, Mich. - Grand Valley State started the cross country season with the 2009 Hope Vanderbilt Invitational at Holland, Mich., Saturday, Sept. 5. Hope College hosted the invitational which included three other area schools including GLIAC rival Ferris State.

The women's squad finished 1st overall in the race with five runners finishing in the top six spots. Hope College finished second, while Ferris State, Cornerstone, and Albion rounded out the standings.

Lynsey Ardingo was the top finisher for the GVSU women's cross country team. She crossed the finished line in 18:32, while Amy Kolin came in second with a time of 18:34. Grand Valley State's Monica Kinney came in third with a time of 18:44.

On the men's side, Tyler Emmorey led the Lakers to a second place finish with a time of 25:50 which was the second-best individual time. Nathan Knisely was third with a time of 26:04 and Jeff Nordquist finished fifth at 26:13. Cornerstone ran to a second place finish followed by Hope, Albion, and Ferris State.

"This was a very solid season opener for our men and women. It was a good course to challenge our fitness," said head coach Jerry Baltes.

Grand Valley's runners will return to action on Sept. 18 at the MSU Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.
