GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The fifth-ranked Grand Valley State men's cross country team crushed the competition at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championship on Friday (Oct. 5), placing four runners in the top five and nine in the top 15.
Redshirt freshman Spencer Pageau (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) won the 8k event, hosted by Calvin College, with a time of 24:35.5. His teammate and fellow redshirt freshman Joe Duff (Grand Haven, Mich.) finished just behind him with a time of 24:37.6.
The Laker dominance continued in fourth and fifth, as junior Brent Showerman (South Lyon, Mich./Michigan State) and senior Jake Isaacson (Menominee, Mich.) crossed the line in times of 24:51.2 and 24:57.3, respectively.
Another pair of GVSU student-athletes found themselves inside the top 10 as well, with redshirt freshmen Ahmed Elmi (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Chad Cini (Northville, Mich.) crossing the line in eighth and ninth. Elmi clocked in at 25:01.3 with Cini just behind at 25:03.4.
Sophomore Kousei Yajima (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) finished 12th with a time of 25:09.0, while juniors Bryce Pulley (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Malone) and Ryan Ziolko (Lake Orion, Mich.) were also able to crack the top 15, finishing in 14th (25:18.4) and 15th (25:20.9), respectively.
The Lakers easily took the team title, tallying just 20 points with their top five runners. Calvin (73), Saginaw Valley State (138), Northwood (162) and Cornerstone (191) rounded out the top five of the competition.
GVSU also had multiple student-athletes running in the "open" division, both as unattached and as part of the squad.
The Lakers will take next weekend off in preparation for the GLIAC Cross Country Championships, taking place on Saturday, October 20th in Midland, Mich.
