All-American Jason VanElst
 
 

May 25, 2002 - Grand Valley State finished in 48th position in the men's competition with 2.33 points at the 2002 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships in San Angelo, Texas. Ben Hirdes earned All-American honors with an eighth place finish in the pole vault finishing with a height of 15-10. Fellow senior Jason Van Elst notched All-American honors of his own with a seventh-place (185-2) in the hammer throw.

Nate Hinkle and Jason VanElst both competed in finals for the men on Saturday, with Hinkle finishing ninth in the high jump and VanElst posting a 17th place finish in the shot put. Pat Garrett was second in his heat of the 400m run (47.65), but did not advance to the finals.
