Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State dominated the 2005 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and won the title by outscoring second place Ashland by 103.5 points. GVSU tallied a two-day total of 220.5 points while Ashland followed with 117 points. The title was the Lakers' third straight outdoor title and marked the third straight year that GVSU has swept the GLIAC cross country, indoor and outdoor championships. In addition, Grand Valley State has now won four of the last GLIAC Outdoor titles. GVSU head coach Jerry Baltes was named GLIAC Coach of the Year for the third time in the last five years.
GVSU dominated in all facets, scoring points in the sprints, middle distance, distance and field events. Junior Kenny Coleman won the 400 (48.17) and placed second in the 200 (22.05). Freshman Kris Olgesbee finished second in the 400 and anchored the 4x400 relay in which he made a pass in the final 50 yards to give the Lakers the win. Joe LeFevre, Josh Pahl and Brian Boeve ran the first three legs. Brian Boeve won the 800 (1:54.06), while John Collins was second (1:54.33) and Joe Wojie sixth (1:56.36). Nate Peck turned in a stellar day with second place finishes in the 1500 (3:53.47) and the 5000 (14:40.19). Garron Lucius finishd second in the 110 hurdles (14.33), while Joe LeFevre was fourth (14.75) and Dan Jackson was fifth (14.82). LeFevre added a second place finish in the 400 hurdles (52.50) and Bill Makela claimed third (53.06) in the 400 hurdles. John Ybarra and Nick Natale claimed third and fourth in the shot put, while Ian Morrison and Mike Simon also finished third and fourth in the discus. The Lakers 4x100 relay team was second with a time of 42.00.
