University Center, Mich. - Grand Valley State is in first place after the opening day of competition at the 2003 GLIAC Track & Field Championships. The Lakers totalled a first-day total of 46 points, while Ashland followed in second place with 35 points.
Nick Hoeve and Romelle Taylor got the Lakers rolling with a one-two finish in the Hammer Throw. Hoeve, who was the ninth and final qualifier after prelims with a throw of 147-9, unleashed a toss of 173-09 in the finals to capture the GLIAC title. Taylor was second with a toss of 160-07. Mark Terpstra (31:23.51) and Blake Terhune (31:26.73) finished fourth and fifth in the 10,000 meter run. Dave Harvey finished ninth with a time of 33:04, 44 seconds faster than his seed time. Jack Martin was seventh in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:49.07. Kirk Manchip was second in the thriple jump (46-2.25), while Ryan Tibble was fifth (43-9.50). Kevin Kimpel claimed a fifth place finish in the javelin with a toss of (161-08) and teammate Travis Smith was eighth with a throw of 154-11.
Grand Valley State is looking for a clean sweep in the 2002-03 track and field and cross country titles. The GVSU men claimed both the cross country and indoor titles prior to this weekends outdoor championships.
