Jan. 12, 2012
The Grand Valley State track and field team will host their first meet of the 2012 calendar year this weekend at the Kelly Family Sports Center as the Bob Eubanks Open begins on Friday (Jan. 13). The men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon will start at 10 a.m. while the running and field events will begin at 3 p.m. The multis will finish on Saturday (Jan. 14) morning at 10 a.m.
The majority of the GVSU athletes will be competing in the meet, with only some of the top distance runners sitting out.
"We are excited to kick off the 2012 season this weekend." said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We have some great teams coming in and the meet will be very competitive for our student athletes."
The Lakers had a couple successful home meets before the student athletes enjoyed winter break and Baltes hopes to continue that level of competition in the future and raise the bar as the season goes.
"This will give us a great gauge to see where we are at coming off the break and what we have to improve on to be ready for the rest of the season."
The schools who will be sending student athletes to this weekend's meet include Alma, Bethel (Ind.), Cornerstone, Davenport, Ferris State, Huntington, Malone, Michigan State, Northwood, University of Notre Dame, Saginaw Valley State, Siena Heights, South Florida, St. Joseph's (Ind.) and Valparaiso.
