Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State University saw strong individual performances in the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday, Dec. 18 at the Laker Turf Building. Sophomore Serena Black took home two first place finishes, while senior Candice Wheat took home one of her own. GVSU will compete in the new year on Jan. 7 at the Laker Early Bird.

Black qualified for the NCAA meet, running a provisional qualifying time of 7.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash. She also won the event with a finals time of 7.80 seconds. Black also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.87 seconds. In the 60-meter hurdles, Wheat took first with a time of 8.70 seconds, while sophomore Jade Hull placed second with a time of 9.01 and senior Danielle Fonseca crossed the finish line third with a time of 9.06 seconds.

The Grand Valley State's women's 4x400-meter relay teams placed first and second. The first place team crossed the finish line with a time of 3:52.54, ran by Fonseca, Chanelle Caldwell, Kayla Vallar and Wheat. The second place team ran a time of 3:57.07, ran by Kirsten Nozime, Jade Hull, Adrienne Chandler and Stephanie Ostrenga.

Junior Lauren Buresh placed second in the shot put, but placed first among collegiate athletes with a throw of 46' 4.75". Buresh placed fourth in the 20 lb. weight throw with a throw of 49' 0.25", while freshman Jamie Smith placed fifth with a throw of 48' 5.25".

 

 

In the women's high jump, senior Maegan Doyen placed first with a height of 5' 7.25". On the pole vault sophomore Jocelyn Kuksa placed second overall, but first among collegiate athletes with a height of 11' 7.75", while senior Christi Kettelhut placed third with a height of 11' 1.75".

On the men's side of the track, sophomore Xavier Parnell placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.35 seconds. In the 800-meter run, Grand Valley State had three runners place in the top-five. Sophomore Austin Brown placed second with a time of 1:55.73 followed by sophomore Zach Mills in third (1:56.57) and freshman John Dyer finished fourth at a time of 1:56.59.

The Grand Valley State's men's 4x400-meter relay teams placed first and second. The first place team crossed the finish line with a time of 3:18.33, ran by Michael Bareman, Spencer Thomas, Eric Lowe and Troy Rock. The second place team ran a time of 3:24.72, ran by Anthony Kanu, Craig Rumpf, Trey Crongeyer and Marcus Vallar.

In the men's field events, freshman Pat Bond finished second overall, but first among collegiate athletes in the men's weight throw, with a throw of 53' 5.50". Junior Nathaniel Smith placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 45' 9.25", while senior Robert Metellus finished fifth with a jump of 43' 10.50".
