Grand Valley State hosted the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday and had seven men and two women set NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks. The Lakers will host the Laker Early Bird Classic on January 9, 2004 at 4:00 p.m.

On the men's side, senior Ben Hirdes (pole vault), sophomore Brian Beach (pole vault), senior Joe Prouix (shot put), freshman John Ybarra (shot put), freshman Nick Natalie (shot put), senior Boomer Hoppough (55m hurdles), and sophomore Jimmie Freeman (55m hurdles) all recorded NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks.

"Our men had a very solid first meet," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "Our three seniors set the tone in getting seven NCAA Provisional Qualifiers."

"We are very excited to see the progress of both the experience and youth of the program," Baltes added.

The women had two NCAA Provisional Qualifiers in junior Kati Smith (pole vault) and sophomore Natalie Ewing (5,000).

"Our women did a nice job in their first meet of the year," said Baltes. "We were highlighted with two NCAA Provisional Qualifiers in Smith and Ewing."

"We have a lot of new women so it will be a learning process for many of them."
