ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's track and field team had a strong showing at the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday (Dec. 14) evening, winning five events and hitting seven provisional qualifying marks.
In the 400 meter dash, junior Logan Hoffman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia) won the event with a provisional qualifying mark of 48.74 seconds.
A pair of Lakers hit qualifying marks in the 800 meter run. Redshirt freshman Ethan Barnes (Caledonia, Mich.) threatened the school record in the 800 meter run, winning the event with a time of 1:51.78, just missing the GVSU record time of 1:50.74. Joining him with a provisional qualifying mark was junior Jeremy Wilk (Wood Dale, Ill./Driscoll Catholic), who finished third with a time of 1:53.25.
The 4x400 meter relay team of junior Nathaniel Hammersmith (Stryker, Ohio/Archbold), redshirt freshman Daniel Pung (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West), junior Mohamed Mohamed (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and Hoffman hit a provisional mark with their event-winning time of 3:18.08.
In the field events, senior Donny Stiffler (Webberville, Mich./Williamston) had a notable day, winning two events and notching two provisional qualifying marks. Stiffler won both the shot put (16.13m) and weight throw (17.82m), with NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks in both.
Junior Tendo Lukwago (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) also hit a provisional mark with a triple jump mark of 14.32 meters, good for a third place finish.
Notching a pair of top three finishes was redshirt freshman Blake Donson (Greentown, Ind./Eatsern), who finished second in the weight throw (17.46m) and third in the shot put (14.89m). Another pair of top finishes in the throws was tallied by freshman Darien Thornton (Huber Heights, Ohio), who finished fourth in both the shot put (14.09m) and weight throw (16.25m).
Sophomore Brent Brock (Lockport, Ill.) had a third-place finish in the long jump (6.65m) and a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (13.21m), while another pair of top five finishes was captured by freshman Sean Wells (Fox Lake, Ill./Grant Community). Wells finished second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.32) and fifth in the 200 meter dash (22.53).
Also with a good showing, nearly hitting a provisional qualifying mark, was junior Patrick Livengood (Carpentersville, Ill./Dundee-Crown), who finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.99 meters.
The Lakers will now have the holiday season off before coming back to the Kelly Family Sports Center for the Bob Eubanks Open on January 11th and 12th.
