ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's track and field team began the 2012-13 indoor season on Friday (Nov. 30) evening at the Kelly Family Sports Center, hosting the GVSU Early Bird Open.
The Lakers were able to end the first indoor meet of the season with two NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and one new school record.
Nathaniel Hammersmith (Stryker, Ohio/Archbold) established a new school record in the 300 meter dash, besting his own mark from last year. Hammersmith finished second in the event with a GVSU record time of 34.62 seconds, beating last year's record of 35.19 that he set. It also would have been a new Kelly Family Sports Center record, but Mike Wetzel (Loyola (Ill.)) won the event with a time of 34.35 seconds, establishing himself as the new record holder in the building.
Hammersmith also had a part in one of two provisional qualifying marks on the day, teaming up with redshirt freshman Daniel Pung (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West), junior Mohamed Mohamed (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and junior Logan Hoffman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia) to finish third in the 4x400 meter relay with a provisional qualifying mark of 3:17.39.
The other provisional qualifying mark of the day came from redshirt freshman Blake Donson (Greentown, Ind./Eastern). As part of his impressive day, Donson hit a qualifying mark of 18.00 meters during his victory in the weight throw. He also finished second in the shot put with a toss of 15.20 meters.
Donson was part of a trio of Lakers to finish in the top five of the weight throw. Junior Nathan Dekam (McBain, Mich./Christian) was third in the event (16.56m) and sophomore Lee VanKampen (Zeeland, Mich./East) was fifth (15.61m).
Also earning a victory on the day was redshirt freshman Ethan Barnes (Caledonia, Mich.), who had an impressive win in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:29.42. Junior teammate Jeremy Wilk (Wood Dale, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) finished third in the event with a time of 2:32.30.
GVSU placed five runners in the top nine of the 5,000 meter run, led by senior Jake Isaacson (Menominee, Mich.), who finished fourth with a time of 14:51.12. Just behind him was junior Joe Graves (Milford, Mich./Hartland) in fifth (14:51.59) and senior Stephen Fuelling (Milford, Mich.) in sixth (14:53.87). Sophomore Alan Peterson (Ironwood, Mich./Luther Wright) was eighth (14:57.32) and junior Josh Moskalewski (Allendale, Mich.) finished ninth (15:00.13).
Sophomore Trent Chappell (Jenison, Mich.) also had a good showing in the field, finishing fourth in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.99 meters.
The Lakers will have next weekend off as they prepare to host the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday, December 14th at 3:00 p.m. in the Kelly Family Sports Center.
