San Angelo, Tex. - The Grand Valley State men's track and field team used a pair of second-place finishes to place 12th at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas on Saturday (May 23). GVSU received points from five different athletes and finished just one point shy of a top-10 team score.
Grand Valley State notched a team score of 22 points, finishing behind Fort Valley State and Western State, which each totaled 23 points. St. Augustine's captured the team title with 94 points, while Abilene Christian (86) and Adams State (75) closed out the top-three teams. GVSU also held off Harding (13th place - 20 points) and Alaska Anchorage (14th place - 19 points).
Sophomore Aleksas Abromavicius was one of two Lakers to total a runner-up finish, as he threw the discus 178'10" (54.51 meters), bringing eight points to GVSU's team total. Senior Bryant Wilson also placed second, as his jump of 17'4.5" (5.30 meters) in the pole vault, also scoring eight points for the Lakers.
Grand Valley State received multiple scorers in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Tyler Emmorey finished sixth with a time of 9:10.80 (three points), while senior Chris Hammer was seventh at 9:11.93 (two points). Senior Bill Makela came in eighth place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.77 seconds, adding a point to GVSU's score.
