Big Rapids, Mich. - Grand Valley State is in first place after day one of the 2006 GLIAC Men's Outdoor Championship with a team total of 73 points. Saginaw Valley State is second with 48 points. The GLIAC Championships will conclude Friday (May 5) at Ferris State.
The Lakers built their team lead with dominating performances in two events Thursday. GVSU scored 22 points in the hammer throw by taking four of the top six spots, followed by a 20-point performance in the 3000m steeplechase. Casey Fechter finished second in the hammer (187-00), while Josh Harris was third (177-00) and Charles Smith fourth (173-11.) Nick Natale claimed sixth (172-00). Robbie Young claimed the GLIAC title in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:30.80. Chris Hammer finished third (9:39.20) and Curtis Barclay crossed in fifth (9:44.80). Matt Wish just missed out on a GLIAC title in the 10000m run with a clocking of 31:52.98, just three seconds behind the winner. Mark VanderMeer was eighth (32:49.93).
Mike Stowe followed his GLIAC title in the decathalon with sixth place finishes in the high jump (6-2.75) and the javelin (169-1) for an individual point total of 16. Kevin Kimpel was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 170-00.
