Grand Valley State's men's track and field team broke three school records and posted six NCAA Qualifying times at the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College. The Lakers will host the GLIAC Championships on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6 at Lubbers Stadium.
Robby Young broke his own school record in the steeple chase with a time of 9:17.11. Young set record of 9:26.80 a few weeks ago at the Al Owens Classic. Nate Peck and Chris Pabst both broke the previous record in the 5,000. Peck ran a 14;20.43, while Pabst ran the event in a time of 14:38.42. All three times were NCAA Qualifying marks.
Also recording NCAA Qualifying milestones, were Don Wilkins in the 10,000 (32:26.22) and Garron Lucius in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.72. Ian Morrison recorded a throw of 162'11" in the discus to post a qualifying mark as well.
The 4x800 team consisting of John Collins, Brian Cermak, Joe Wojie, and Bryan Boeve edged out Eastern Michigan for a Laker victory. The team improved their time from last season by over five seconds.
"This was a great meet for our men," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "To have three school records broken and six individuals get on the NCAA list is quite an accomplishment."
"This will be a great confidence builder going into the GLIAC Championships this week," Baltes added. "We will need to be ready to compete in hopes of winning our third title in a row."
