Grand Valley State's Robby Young broke the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a winning time of 9:26.80 at the Al Owens Classic hosted by GVSU. The previous record was held by teammate Jason Prowant who set the mark in 2002 with a time of 9:27.3.

"This was a great opener for Robby Young in the steeple," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "He has a very bright future ahead of him. We are excited to see what he can do over the next few weeks."

Casey Fecther posted a mark of 53.41m in the hammer throw, which was a NCAA Qualifying mark.

"Casey had a very nice break through in the hammer throw," said Baltes. "He has been close the past two weekends and it was really nice to see him put a good one together and get on the national list."

"The team is starting to make the needed steps to be in a postion to compete for a team title at the GLIAC Championships," added Baltes.
