Results

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State started the 2003 Outdoor Track and Field season this weekend as they competed in three different meets. The Lakers participated in the Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee, at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and at the Laker Open. Ben Hirdes and Nick Hoeve both hit qualifying marks for the NCAA national meet and Hirdes set a new school mark in the pole vault.

Hirdes set the new GVSU standard in the pole vault at 17'1" at SIUE. Hoeve qualified in the hammer throw with a distance of 176'3.75" at the Laker Open. Also at the Laker Open, Kirk Manchip won the triple jump with a distance of 44'5".

At SIUE, Justin Adamec and Pat Garrett finished second and third, respectively, in the 400. Adamec ran a 49.01 while Garrett was just behind him at 49.59. Ademec also placed third in the 200 as he ran 21.82. The two worked together to lead GVSU to a second place finish in the 4x400 with a time of 4:16.79.

Jeff Vyain and Mark Terpstra competed at the Sea Ray Relays, one of the top meets in the country with numerous NCAA DI schools. Terpstra was seventh in the 10K with a time of 31:33.64, while Vyain placed 10th in the 5K as he ran 15:07.09.

The Lakers will be at the Butler Open next Saturday, April 19, in Indianapolis.
