University Center, Mich. - Grand Valley State, the three-time defending GLIAC Indoor Champions, jumped out to a 62-point lead after the first day of competition at the 2003 GLIAC Indoor Championships. GVSU finished with 91 points, while Saginaw Valley State and Ashland follow with 29 points apiece.
Romelle Taylor (weight throw) and Brian Beach (pole vault) claimed GLIAC titles on day one. Taylor won the weight throw with a toss of 55-7.5, while Beach took home top honors in the pole vault with a vault of 15-5. GVSU dominated the weight throw, placing three among the top four. Besides Taylor's first place finish, Nick Hoeve placed second (55-6) and Mike Simon fourth (51-3). GVSU place three among the top five in the long jump, highlighted by Kenny Coleman's third place jump of 23-4. Joe LeFevre finished fourth (23-1) and Kirk Manchip fifth (22-8.75. Manchip also placed second in the high jump (6-8.5), while Mike Hefty was fourth in the pole vault (14-5.25).
In the lone running event final, Tim Nichols placed third in the 5000 (14:49.45), while Chris Pabst was fourth (14:55.56). The Laker 4x800 relay team finished 2nd (7:46.55).
The 2003 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will conclude Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University
