Grand Valley State's men's track and field team finished first at the 2010 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday (Feb. 27) evening in the Laker Turf Building with a team score of 167 points. Ashland finished second with 123 points followed by Tiffin (84.5), Saginaw Valley State (82) and Hillsdale in fifth (68). Head coach Jerry Baltes was awarded GLIAC Coach of the Year.

Grand Valley State will now prepare for the NCAA Division II National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. March 12-13. Following is how the Lakers finished event-by-event.

400-Meter Dash

Junior Craig Rumpf finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.29 seconds.

800-Meter Run

Freshman John Dyer crossed the finish line fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.29, hitting the provisional mark for the first time this season.

Mile Run

The Lakers took three of the top-four sports, scoring 23 points. Sophomore Tyler Emmorey took the top-spot with a time of 4:10.97, followed by freshman Jon Manby in second (4:12.36) and Larry Julson in fourth (4:14.31). Emmorey and Manby both hit the NCAA provisional mark for the first time this season.

3000-Meter Run

Sophomore Jeff Nordquist took the GLIAC title in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:32.11. Sophomore Paul Zielinski placed fifth (8:36.58) and Emmorey in eighth (8:39.73).

5000-Meter Run

Zielinski captured GLIAC Champion with a time of 14:37.52 in the 5000-meter run, while sophomore Ryan Toth placed third (14:43.17). Zielinski and Toth both hit the NCAA provisional mark.

60-Meter Hurdles

Sophomore Ryan Brown crossed the finish line third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.34 seconds, while freshman Jacob Alexander placed sixth (8.49).

60-Meter Dash

Sophomore Jovon Faulk crossed the finish line fourth with a time of 6.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash, while sophomore Xavier Parnell placed seventh (7.08).

4x400-Meter Relay

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Michael Bareman, Rumpf, Spencer Thomas and Eric Lowe, finished fifth with a time of 3:18.48.

Distance Medley

The DMR of Julson, Rumpf, Austin Brown and Pat Sage, crossed the finish line third with a time of 9:57.21, hitting the provisional mark.

High Jump

Senior Nate Miller automatically qualified for nationals in the high jump with a first place finish and a jump of 6'11.75". Freshman John Iott placed fifth (6'6") and John Gibbons seventh (6'4"), scoring 16 points for the Lakers.

Pole Vault

GVSU scored 15 points in the men's pole vault with Quinton Dennis placing second and Matt Gordeneer in third. Both had a vault of 16'3.25", which beat their previous provisional marks.

Long Jump

Senior Ryan Rademacher finished second in the long jump with a jump of 22'7.25".

Triple Jump

Senior Robert Metellus placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 44'6.75, followed by junior Nathaniel Smith in fifth with a jump of 44'0.75".

Shot Put

The Lakers scored 17 points in the shot put and had three athletes in the top-five. Sophomore Matt Armstrong placed second with a throw of 56'11.50", while Donny Stiffler finished fourth (56') and Ian Evans fifth (55'2").

Heptathlon

Senior Peter Antor finished fifth in the heptathlon with a total score of 4,438, followed by Dewey Sinclair in sixth with 4,208.
