Grand Valley State competed at the Boilermaker Invitational hosted by Purdue University and also hosted the Grand Rapids Championships at the GVSU Fieldhouse last weekend. The Lakers made final improvements as they are set to head to the GLIAC Championships this Friday and Saturday at the University of Findlay. Both the men's and women's teams have won the GLIAC Indoor Track and Field GLIAC Championships six years in a row.
At the Boilermaker Invitational, Nick Natale placed second in the weight throw with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 58-11.50. Charles Smith won the event with a throw of 59-08.50. Krystle Hoover won the shot put with a mark of 40-09.50 and Morgan Acre placed first in the weight throw (56-09.25).
At the Grand Rapids Championships, senior Kenny Coleman won the 400 meter dash in a time of 49.54 and freshman Adam Kennedy placed first in the 800 meter dash as he ran a 1:56.89. Junior Mike Stowe won the 1,000 meter run (2:47.50), while sophomore Bill Makela placed first in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 7.97. Freshman Matt Epkey took first in the long jump (22-08.25).
Senior April Szatkowski won the 200 meter dash in a time of 25.88, while sophomore Micaela Mayer finished first in the 400 meter dash (59.60). Junior Meredith DeVries captured first place in the high jump (5-03.00).
