ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's track and field team, ranked fifth in the latest USTFCCCA polls, finished up competition at the GVSU Big Meet on Saturday (Feb. 9), collecting five top-five finishes on day two of the meet.
As a team, the Lakers hit three NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks, including a record-breaking performance in the distance medley relay.
The DMR team of freshman Ethan Barnes, junior Nathaniel Hammersmith, junior Jeremy Wilk and junior Larry Julson broke the old meet record with a time of 9:56.40, but finished second. The Lakers were the highest-finishing collegiate team, and were beat out only by the Indiana Invaders club team, who won with a new building and meet record time of 9:54.09. The time that GVSU finished in was, however, good enough for a provisional qualifying mark and the sixth-best men's DMR time in Division II this season.
The other two provisional qualifying marks and another pair of top-five finishes were accomplished by senior Donny Stiffler in the throws. Stiffler finished fourth in both the shot put (16.01m/52'6.5") and the weight throw (18.30m/60'0.5").
GVSU had a trio of student-athletes finish in the top 10 of the long jump, with junior Steve Revies leading the way after a mark of 6.75 meters (22'1.75"). Sophomore Nathan Fraeyman finished fifth (6.64m/21'9.5"), while new triple jump school record-holder Tendo Lukwago finished 10th (6.39m/20'11.75").
Freshman Lucas Landis had a solid performance in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.95 meters (6'4.75") to finish in 11th against a wealth of top teir competition.
The Lakers will now prepare for the last meet before the post-season begins, when GVSU hosts the GVSU Tune-Up on Friday (Feb. 15) at 3 p.m. inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. It will be the last opportunity for various Lakers to improve on their season-best marks before the GLIAC Championship.
