Grand Valley State had four men record NCAA Qualifying marks at the Mike Lints Laker Challenge on Friday. Mike Lints, a Grand Valley State graduate and a former Laker sprint coach, was killed in a car accident in 2001. Each year, alumni and friends return to GVSU to pay tribute to Coach Lints by running an alumni 4x400m at the meet.
Senior Brian Beach posted a height of 16-02.00 in the pole vault to take first place. Junior Charles Smith recorded a qualifying mark of 59-05.75 and a first place finish in the weight throw. Junior Nick Natale won the shot put with a qualifying mark 52-01.75 and took second in the weight throw with a mark of 56-07.25. Sophomore Nate Peck won the mile in a time of 4:11.47, breaking the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena track record.
"This was a very solid meet for us," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We got a chance to see where we are at and what direction we need to head in at this point."
"We saw some great openers in the new year from our field event athletes."
The Lakers will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invite on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 10:00 a.m.
