Laker Men Compete At Wilson/ITA Great Lakes Regional

Midland, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team recorded several outstanding performances at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Men's Tennis Great Lakes Regional in Midland, Michigan. The Lakers competed individually in the bracket style singles tournament, as well as with their doubles partner in the bracket style doubles tournament. GVSU will host the Grand Valley State University Invitational this weekend starting at 4:00 p.m. at Jenison High School with Lewis University, Calvin College, and Grand Rapids Community College participating.

Marc Roesslein turned in the best performance for the Lakers this weekend as he made the quarterfinals in both the singles and doubles. Roesslein won his opening round match by a score of 6-2, 6-4. He then went on to defeat consecutive seeds in the tournament taking down the #11 seed Ahmet Demir (Ferris State) by a score of 6-2, 6-1 and the #4 seed Tonis Irdoja (Lewis) 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Roesslein fell to the #6 seed Antonio Garcia Santos (Drury) 6-3, 6-1 who went on to win the tournament.

Tony Dang teamed up with Roesslein in the doubles to reach the quarterfinals. The tandem got through a tough opening round match against Price/Smith (Indy) by a score of 9-7. The duo then cruised in their second round match winning by a score of 8-2. In the quarterfinals, they then fell to the #5 seeds Lapimaa/Pestinger (Lewis) 8-2.>p>

In singles play, Tony Dang seeded #7, won his opening round match in a long 3 set match by a score of 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 over Daneil Anthony (MO. St. Louis). Zach Newell (Rockhurst) then upset Dang in the second round by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

Phillip Claus and Brock Plangger both fell in the second round. Claus easily won his opening round match over Gilbert Wang (Bellarmine) by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Claus played well in defeat, losing to the #13 seed Ivan Marevic (Drury) 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Plangger made quick work of his opponent in his opening round defeating Alex Cherman (MO. St. Louis) 6-1, 6-4. Plangger then fell in the second round to Lance Koetter (No. Kentucky) 6-1, 6-1.

 

 

Jeff Globerson also participated in the singles, but received a tough draw facing the #3 seed Uno Lapimaa (Lewis) in the opening round and fell 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Phillip Claus teamed up with Brock Plangger and lost in the first round to Hamm/Quiroz (South. Ind.) by a score of 9-7. Jeff Globerson paired up with Ryan Diebold and they too fell in the opening round to Clark/Worley (Bellarmine) by a score of 8-4.
