GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team appeared in nearly every championship bracket final over the weekend at the GVSU Invitational at Grandville High School, including putting a student-athlete in each of the four singles title matches. The Lakers wound up with two titles on the weekend.

The GVSU-hosted tournament pitted the Lakers against Calvin, Cornerstone and Davenport in four singles brackets and two doubles brackets.

In the A singles competition, both Francis Bertrand and Andrew Darrell were victorious in their quarterfinal matchups. In the semifinals, Bertrand fell in a three-set match to Davenport's JP van Antwerpen (6-2, 5-7, 10-4), while Darrell continued on with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cornerstone's Austin Hunt. In the finals, however, Darrell fell in a hard fought three-set match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 to van Antwerpen.

It was all GVSU in the B singles championship bracket. Both Billy Heckman and Jack Heiniger won their quarterfinal matches in straight sets, then did the same in the semifinals. That set up a championship match between teammates, and Heckman came across as the winner. Heiniger battled, but fell to Heckman, 6-1, 3-6, 10-4.

In the C singles championship bracket, again the Lakers had a pair of student-athletes victorious in their quarterfinal matches. Both Ben Esh-Nauta and Andrew Bole won in straight sets, while Bole then took down Davenport's Tyler Chambers (6-4, 6-1) in the semifinals. Esh-Nauta fell, however, to Cornerstone's Alex Tarnow, 6-4, 6-1. In the finals, Tarnow was able to get past Bole in a back-and-forth match, 6-4, 0-6, 10-8.

In the final singles bracket at D singles, it was a Laker taking home the hardware. Michael Kaye won his quarterfinal match over Davenport's Eric Pell (6-3, 4-6, 10-5), then beat Cornerstone's Chris Selva (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) in the semifinals. In the championship match, he was able to defeat Davenport's Kevin Slagh (7-6 (10-8), 6-1) to win the title. Andrew Heuerman, also competing in the D singles bracket, dropped each of his two matches in the bracket.

In doubles competition, a pair of Laker teams made their way to the semifinals of the A doubles championship. Bertrand/Heckman won their quarterfinal match 8-2, while Darrell/Heiniger won theirs, 8-4. In the semifinals, however, Bertran/Heckman won 8-0, but Darrell/Heiniger's run came to an end with an 8-6 loss. In the finals, Davenport's Chambers/Chambers was able to beat GVSU's Bertrand/Heckman, 8-5.

At B doubles, the team of Quinn Sylow/Kaye won their quarterfinal match, 8-3, then switched things up and went with Sylow/Heuerman in the semifinals. Unfortunately, they fell to eventual B doubles championship, Pell/van Antwerpen, 8-4. In the B doubles consolation bracket, Bole/Esh-Nauta rebounded from a tight quarterfinals loss (9-8 (8-5)) to take an 8-4 victory in the semifinals and then win an 8-2 decision in the finals over Calvin's Griffin/Hill.

The men's tennis squad will keep on their current tournament run next weekend, when they travel to Detroit to take part in the Titan Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 12).
