The Grand Valley State men's tennis team competed at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill. from Sept. 29 - Oct. 1. GVSU tallied a 6-12 record in singles action but came back with a 5-3 doubles record. The Lakers will host the GVSU Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7. The tournament will take place in Allendale, starting at 4:00 pm on Friday.
Freshman Ryan Diebold of Allegan, Mich. tallied a 2-1 record on the weekend. Diebold competed in the Flight B singles. Ryan defeated Ben Thompson of Eastern Illinois, 6-1, 6-3 and followed that up with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Illinois-Chicago's Danai Samuriwo. Diebold was knocked off by Sam Sweeney of Illinois-Chicago by a 6-2, 6-1 count.
Sophomore Alex Switzer also played well for GVSU, posting a 2-1 record of his own in Flight B singles. Switzer triumphed over Nicolas Ortega of Chicago State with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Switzer went on to defeat Tim O'Brien of Illinois-Chicago with a tough 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win before falling to Chris Thomas of Eastern Illinois, 6-2, 6-1.
Picking up a win for GVSU in Flight A singles was freshman Patrick Troy, who defeated Jordan Nestrud of Eastern Illinois, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3. Freshman Matt Globerson also found the win column for GVSU, beating Ben Thompson of Eastern Illinois, 7-5, 6-1.
The doubles play saw GVSU took on Eastern Illinois and Chicago State in a round-robin format. The team of Tony Dang and Brock Plangger took home a successful 3-0 record over the weekend. They knocked off Abram Mamahit and Cameron Shanklin, 8-4. They also recorded wins over Eastern Illinois' Sean Bush and Chris Thomas (8-6) and Ben Thompson and Tony Pulea, 8-4. The team of Adam Sandusky and Patrick Troy also played well in Chicago, tallying a 2-1 record.
