The Grand Valley State men's tennis team completed a successful weekend at the annual ITA/Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. The tournament lasted from Friday through Sunday, Sept. 22-24. Next up for the Lakers is the Windy City Classic in Chicago, Ill. from Sept. 29 - Oct. 1.
The singles tournament was divided into a Main bracket and a B bracket. In the Main bracket, senior Adam Sandusky defeated Northern Kentucky's Fileppe Rosetti, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Sandusky also went on to defeat Shepherd University's Casey Moser by a 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 margin. Adam was then eliminated from the tournament in the third round (6-0, 6-2) at the hands of Christoph Burger from Southern Indiana.
Also, in the main bracket, freshman Tony Dang won his first round match against Andrew McGuire, 6-2, 6-2. Dang was knocked out in the second round by Peter Grimsey of Rockhurst (6-2, 6-0).
In the singles B bracket, sophomore Alex Switzer won his first two matches, defeating Matt Thomas of Findlay (6-3, 6-2) and Bobby Sisson of Shepherd (6-2, 6-4), advancing him into the semifinals where he met up with fellow teammate Matt Globerson. Globerson got there by defeating Mercyhurst's Kyle King (6-1, 6-2), Indianapolis' John Wright-Piekarski (6-4, 6-1), and Michael Sarno of Findlay (7-5, 6-1). Alex Switzer went on to defeat Globerson in a hard-fought match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, advancing him to the finals. In the finals, Nathan Matthews of Bellarmine defeated Switzer, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, the main bracket saw the team of Brock Plangger and Tony Dang fall in the first round to Fritz Dlabik and Felippe Rossetti of Northern Kentucky (9-8). Adam Sandusky and Patrick Troy also fell, 8-2, to Federico Levi and Nikola Prpic of Drury.
