GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team took part in day two of the 2013 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Tournament and a couple Lakers had big performances on Saturday (Sept. 21). It was the second of the three-day tournament hosted by GVSU at Orchard Hills.
In the A singles consolation bracket, Billy Heckman picked up two wins to start the day, defeating Ohio Dominican's Tyler Johnston in the round of 16 (6-3, 6-4), then beating Indianapolis' Vlad Dobre in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-1). In the semifinals, he went up against Joe Bray from Southern Indiana, but fell 6-4, 6-3.
Andrew Bole had advanced to the quarterfinals of the B singles championship, but fell 6-0, 6-4 to Indianapolis' Fausto Cordova.
In the B singles consolation bracket, Ben Esh-Nauta went on a huge run. After winning his round of 16 match on Friday, Esh-Nauta went on to win three straight matches on Saturday to take the B singles consolation crown. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Lewis' John Richert (6-2, 1-6, 6-4), then took down Davis & Elkins' William Hill in the semifinals (6-4, 6-0). He faced GLIAC foe Reid Wynkoop in the finals and came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
In doubles play, the Lakers only had competitors in the B doubles brackets. In the championship bracket, the pair of Bole/Esh-Nauta were in the semifinals, but fell to Wayne State's Joseph/Robineau in a tight 9-7 match.
The final day of the 2013 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Tournament will take place on Sunday (Sept. 22) at Orchard Hills, but the Lakers have completed their play in the tournament. The finals in the championship brackets will all take place on the final day.
