GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team took part in day one of the 2013 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship on Friday (Sept. 20), taking place at Orchard Hills and hosted by GVSU.
The Lakers began the tournament with four student-athletes in the "A" singles draw, five in the "B" singles draw, and two doubles pairs each in both the "A" and "B" doubles draws.
In the "A" singles draw, Andrew Darrell won his first-round matchup against Illinois-Springfield's Ben Main (6-3, 6-4), but fell in the round of 32 against Dario Vidaurre of Missouri-St. Louis (6-3, 5-7, 10-8).
The three other Lakers in the "A" singles draw moved to the consolation bracket after the first round, and all three were victorious in their first round of consolation play. Billy Heckman advanced by default over Rockhurst's Pawel Grzegrzokla, Jack Heiniger defeated Michigan Tech's Pedro Rodriguez (6-1, 6-1) and Francis Bertrand took down Davis & Elkins' Thomas Judd (6-1, 6-2) to move on to Saturday's action.
In the "B" singles draw, both Michael Kaye and Andrew Bole won their first-round matchup. Kaye beat Ferris State's Symanski (7-5, 6-2), while Bole beat Davis & Elkins' Guilherme Hubsch (6-0, 6-1) in the round of 32. Kaye then fell to Indianapolis' Trevor Cox (6-2, 6-4) in the round of 16, but Bole continued on, taking out Rockhurst's Luke Salisbury (6-1, 6-1). Andrew Heuerman, Ben Esh-Nauta and Brad Plaisier all moved to the consolation bracket after the first round, and Esh-Nauta won his first match over Ferris State's Will Huntington (7-6 (9-7), 6-3) to move on to Saturday's play.
In "A" doubles competition, both GVSU pairs moved to the consolation bracket, but fell in close matches, as Bertrand/Heckman lost 9-8 (8-5) and Darrell/Heiniger lost 8-5.
In "B" doubles, Heuerman/Kaye lost their first round matchup, but find themselves in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
Continuing on to play in the "B" doubles championship bracket is the team of Bole/Esh-Nauta. In the round of 16, they won 8-1 over Davis & Elkins' Gainer/Miller. In the quarterfinals, they defeated the team of Hawes (Findlay) and Carlson (Wayne State), 8-4 to play on as one of the final four teams in the bracket.
Play will continue on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 8:30 a.m. at Orchard Hills.
