Box Score

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the Great Lakes Region Tournament in Midland, Mich. The Lakers fell to Ferris State by a 5-3 count in an extremely close match. The Bulldogs took two of three doubles matches and three out of five in singles to clinch the victory. Ferris State advances to the second round to play Northwood, while GVSU ends its season at 16-6.

In doubles, the team of Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson was the only tandem to record a victory, defeating Kevin Brundle and Jeremiah DeJose 9-8 (7-3). The other two doubles matches went down to the wire, but saw the Bulldogs come away with the wins. Ferris' Akshay Chellappa and Corey Banghart triumphed over Adam Sandusky and Tony Dang, 8-6. In the No. 2 doubles slot, Bryan Karazia Brian Anderson notched a close win over Justin Sauerbrey and Patrick Troy, 9-8 (8-6).

The Bulldogs would then need to win three singles matches in order to seal the victory. The Lakers answered strong, as freshman Troy downed Banghart easily, 6-2, 6-1. Dang recorded the other victory for the Lakers, winning by a 6-4, 6-3 margin. But it was just not enough as Ferris was able to capitalize in the 1, 4, and 5 singles positions. Sandusky fell to Chellappa in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while freshman Brock Plangger was defeated by Anderson of Ferris State, 6-3, 6-1. Kevin Brundle finished off the Lakers by defeating Globerson, 6-2, 6-2.

Ferris avenges its earlier loss to GVSU and continues into the second round. The Lakers complete an impressive campaign that saw them finish second in the GLIAC and a finish with a 16-6 record.
