The second-seeded GVSU men's tennis team took down its second opponent of the day by beating third-seeded Mercyhurst, 5-2. The Lakers earn a chance to play for the GLIAC Championship on Sunday, April 22 at 10:00 am for what will be their best finish in recent years. They will face the winner of the Northwood (1)/Wayne State (5). Grand Valley won two of three doubles and three of four singles matches on their way to victory. With the win, the Lakers now stand at 18-5 on the season.
GVSU jumped out to a 2-1 lead early, taking two of three doubles matches from the Lakers of Mercyhurst. In No. 2 doubles, Patrick Troy and Justin Sauerbrey defeated Mijo Cotic and Kyle King by an 8-1 count. Also recording a victory for GVSU was Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson, who won 8-3. Adam Sandusky and Tony Dang played in the top doubles slot but lost a close matchup to Mariano Fava and Lee Michael Marnik, 8-6.
In singles play, three Grand Valley State players were able to record victories. Dang earned his second victory of the day, defeating Marnik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Switzer continued his winning ways with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mercyhurst's Kyle King. Sealing the victory for the Lakers was Brock Plangger, who downed Mateusz Przbysz 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sandusky dropped the only singles match for the Lakers, as he fell in the top singles slot, 6-3, 6-2.
