Grand Valley State's men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Mercyhurst College Saturday in the third place match of the GLIAC Tournament. GVSU drops to 16-9 overall, while Mercyhurst improved to 13-8. The Lakers will wait to see if they will earn their first-ever NCAA Great Lakes Regional Tournament bid. Grand Valley was ranked #5 in the last Great Lakes Regional Poll. The top eight teams make the regional tournament.
Grand Valley won two out of three singles matches, but Mercyhurst College won four out of six singles matches. John Nichols defeated Kyle Dehne, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in #1 singles action, while Mariano Fava beat Kyle Klinge, 7-5, 6-2 in the #2 singles slot. Lee Michael Marnik recorded a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 win over Adam Sandusky at #3 singles and at #5 singles, Lucas Krasowski defeated Alex Switzer, 6-1, 6-2. Scott Gregory picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jonathan Vadnal at #4 singles and Mike Bambini beat Joe DeFazio, 6-1, 6-2 at #6 singles action.
Dehne and Sandusky teammed up for an 8-6 win over Nichols and Marnik at #1 doubles, while Klinge and Gregory won 8-5 against Krasowski/DeFazio in the #2 doubles slot. Fava/Veverka beat Nirun Raju and Bambini, 8-2 at #3 doubles.
